We love our puppers like children so spending a little extra on them for treats seems like a no-brainer. With the plethora of options in the dog-treat market, the options can be somewhat overwhelming to say the least. I have two big labradors and if you would ask them to rank their favorite activities, eating would definitely be number one so treat time is highly coveted.

We have a few allocated absolute treat times:

1. When we leave the house
2. Just before bedtime
3. When they return from a walk.

Since labs are notorious jumpers (ok don’t run me up a tree for being a bad trainer because I already know that) so we also will give them a treat to chew on whenever we have guests at the house so they can concentrate on chewing and not stealing snacks. Two things I’ve learning from the snack stealers – never leave party food on a coffee table unsupervised (they are sneaky fast at their own height – and big wiggly tails leave a trail of dog hair at that level) and always push the food back from the edge of the counter (these stinkers are famous for counter surfing in fact my white one was once found on top of the counter in her younger years).

Best Dog Treats Review

Outside of their naughtiness, always brought about by food, these girls rank slightly below my son – to his chagrin – on the love of my life scale so I’m always looking for the best dog treats health-wise for them at the lowest prices. American Journey Grain-Free Oven Baked Crunchy Biscuit Dog Treats

These American Journey treats are our go to staple. I love them because they are grain free. Bailey, my white lab, has a spot of cancer on her snout and we have changed her diet to reduce carbohydrates to keep it in check. The ingredients for these treats are: salmon, sweet potatoes, chickpeas, cane molasses, chicken fat, blueberries, pumpkin, apples, carrots and rosemary extract. There is something call tocopherals in there, supposedly to preserve the chicken fat, but overall a pretty impressive and clean list of ingredients.

Dr. Lyon’s Grain-Free Extra-Small Breed Dental Dog Treats

I don’t know about your dogs, but these two dogs are not very easy going when it comes to brushing their teeth. And let’s be real, my propensity for staying on top of brushing their teeth is pretty much on the low side. I love these Dr. Lyon’s Grain-Free Large Dental Dog Treats as an alternative to the more main-stream Greenies becaus they are again grain free! These dental treats clean all the hard-to-reach teeth—ideal for in between brushings. They are also manufactured in the USA with domestic and imported all-natural ingredients so that makes me feel like I’m ensuring a high quality teeth cleaning chew.

USA Bones & Chews Peanut Butter Flavored Filled Bone Dog Treats

OK, I get it. This treat is a little controversial but after four retrievers, this is our second set of two, these beef bones are THE BEST way of managing super chewers like retrievers. I prefer the bones that are a bit on the larger side and have some thickness to the actual bone to ensure they don’t get through them on day one. We have had these bones last for months and are always a go to when the girls need a chew break. The filling gets devoured right away but the bone itself lasts for a long time. You do need to keep an eye out for splinters and chunks – hopefully you catch those before they swallow them. You also may want to watch that the filling doesn’t stain your carpets if you allow these indoors. But for the most part – these are a absolute necessity with high chewing breeds.

And the treat that is even more controversial than the last – cow hooves! Just like the beef bones, these little stinkers last forever! So hold your noses and give these babies a tray because the super chewers just LOVE them.

Purple Carrot seems to be a good idea for people like me who want to reduce the amount of meat consumed. I’m not a vegetarian or vegan. I just wanted to try new recipes in my kitchen that keep meat to a minimum. I was looking at several different subscription services and Purple Carrot seemed to be a good choice for my needs. I was very excited for my first box to be delivered!

I ordered Purple Carrot to check if the recipes will be simple and tasty, I also had a chance to use the CARROT30 coupon code for $30 off my first order. Price dropped to $41.94 after taxes so for the first box I thought it’s a good price. I adapted the menu to my needs, I wanted simple meals for two, quick preparation time with high protein and after a week the box arrived at my door.

The box was protected against overheating, and each of the three meals was packaged separately, which made it easier to start preparing the ingredients for the first meal. All products were very fresh! I didn’t see any damage, fungus or other problems, the quality of the products was very good. The box also includes recipes with short and simple steps to prepare in the kitchen, you can follow each step and check pictures if your dish looks the same.

I started with a Thai Tempeh Khao Soi with Bok Choy and Crispy Onions. The recipe is quite simple, it took me about 30 minutes to prepare a warm meal. Each step is simply described in the book, so the whole meal preparation seems uncomplicated. The instruction provides exactly the amount of ingredients that I already had in the box, everything is measured perfectly. If you follow the steps, this full experience of cooking a new dish is very fun and not stressful at all. I love the combination of hot spices and coconut milk, so I was excited to try it for the first time! 

Ingredients for Thai Tempeh Khao Soi:

• fresh ginger
• garlic
• baby bok choi
• shallot
• lime
• Thai chile
• turbinado sugar
• red curry paste
• tamari
• coconut milk
• rice noodles
• tempeh
• crispy onions

I used tempeh for the first time! You have to fry it longer to make it crispy, it gives an additional experiment to this dish. I also had a glass of rosé with my dinner which gave the whole meal a fruity aftertaste. It was a good combination between hot spices, lime and soft coconut.  

In general, I think the dinner was successful, tasty, not overwhelming, I’ve tried something new in my kitchen that I would never pick by myself from the store to cook at home. I’m ready for the next dishes from the menu!

I paid $41.94 for my first box after taxes and with the code CARROT30. My next box will cost me $71.94 for 3 meals for 2 people and to be honest, there’s plenty of food for 3rd person or leftovers!
